The ABC’s of Marketing in Our World

Written by Krista Johnson -- March 7th, 2008 in Marketing

Living in an age of advertisement, we are perpetually disillusioned. The perfect life is spread before us every day, but it changes and withers at a touch.” J.B. Priestly

I find this powerful quote to be quite honest and forthcoming in regards to marketing and advertising on a daily basis. Whether we are consciously or unconsciously strolling through our day to day lives, marketing is constantly surrounding us with countless advertisements. The range in which we experience propaganda is endless, as it exists everywhere we as individuals do.

Although this may seem unrecognizable, it is quite true and reasonably plausible. Think about your diurnal routine. Next, list your whereabouts as well as the events you execute throughout the day. Now, recall how each activity and every entity you encountered had either an emblem, a label, a logo, or a symbol that represented a product or service.

There are many possible occurrences you engage with on a regular basis. Take for example, your cell phone. There are multiple ways in which media disperse their advertisements through cellular technology. Ads come in the form of text messages, telemarketers, spam emails, and the infinite internet websites.

Search Engine Optimization

Written by Krista Johnson -- March 4th, 2008 in SEO

CEO, CPA, SEO, SEM…Why are there so many abbreviated business ventures and what do they mean?

In today’s world of fast paced living and infinitely changing technology, it’s no wonder why people tend to get confused with trying to know all the ins and outs of the business world. Let’s take SEO for example. We will try to spread a little education through clear explanation, hoping to become one step closer to better understanding the rules of business.

To kick things off, let us first define what SEO stands for and represents. The letters SEO stand for the abbreviation of Search Engine Optimization and represents the practice of improving your online business website. I personally like to define SEO as the combination of content rich with keywords along with business blogs. SEO allows you to use effective tools and techniques to draw consumers’ attention to your website. Practicing this approach will not only help your business improve, but will also cause your website to climb the charts in search engine rankings.

The way in which this practice works can be relatively simple; however, it can also be very time consuming and detail oriented. In order for SEO to work successfully for your business, the most important aspect is to have the presence of well thought out and considered keywords within your website. Some helpful tools to consider using to assist you on this venture include: AdWords, Google, and Overture. Also take into consideration that searches with dashes are the best, searches with underscores hold a close second, and searches with spaces are the worst. In taking from this information, try to stay away from negative approaches to SEO and stick with positive actions to better your business.

Another imperative concept to realize and employ is that of consistency and dedication. When you are attempting to gain wealth, which can include readership, back links, recognition, and/or money, you must be constantly updating your website. In order to be successful with all these updates you must produce useful blogs repetitively, providing feedback and support for your readers on a day to day basis.

You must also provide bold keywords recurrently. However, be very conscious of your use of key words throughout your website. If you aren’t using enough, your business will take a hit and lack the power to signify its importance. If you are using an abundant amount your business will surely be a good candidate in the keyword search engine election.

By following the preceding information and having passion, patience, and persistence, your attempts to prosper in the business world will be rewarded with success!!

The Hot Dog Theory

Written by Krista Johnson -- February 8th, 2008 in Copywriting

Q: What do you get when you throw a bunch of random things together into one compilation?

A: You get a marvelous, yet sometimes bizarre, creation!

At this point, you may be wondering what in the world I am talking about…Let me explain.

When it comes to writing, there is a smörgåsbord of different components that go into the process. You must consider the brainstorming, the long hours, the funds, the advertising, the dedication, and all the blood, sweat, and tears it takes to produce a product to the right group of consumers.

One way I like looking at this concept is my ‘Hot Dog Theory’.

Like hot dogs, writing is usually prepared commercially by mixing all of the elements in one large pot, otherwise known as the composition. As hot dogs consist of many separate parts, beef, chicken, and pork, writing also consists of many separate parts. The ingredients that go into the recipe for producing great writing consists of nouns, verbs, adjectives, spelling, grammar, structure, and presentation.

Food and writing alike, both move rapidly through each process. They pass through blades and pages; being ground and mixed as well as rewritten and erased, all in order to ensure the end product contains all the needed ingredients; thus making both processes analogous. Each combination is now ready for the next step in the preparation process. The same way in which hot dogs are forced through tubes into casings in preparation for cooking, writing is forced through pens onto pages in preparation for publishing.

After this entire process, your final product is just around the corner. With a few finishing touches and the perfect packaging assembled, this analogy comes full circle as all the steps, hard work, and preparation have now produced a clear, complex, and complete product. So enjoy your literature and hot dogs.

Free Writing

Written by Krista Johnson -- February 5th, 2008 in Copywriting

“To write what you know and go with the flow.”

This is a personal quote I’ve coined and followed throughout my career as a writer. If you’re feeling uneasy about accomplishing any task, just free your mind and let your fingers do the talking. I know in my past, I have often found myself stuck in a corner with no way out. That is, until I opened my closed mind and allowed my thoughts to lead me out.

Whether performing a task in the employment world, or completing a paper in the education world, I always suggest to not sweat the small stuff. Instead, just let your words form the story or thesis within your mind. Permit your sense to delve into your inner core and engage with your subconscious. As I have followed this exercise in previous writings, you too will find how mind altering and freeing this experience can be.

By allowing your sight to bounce from one object to another, don’t question, just let your eyes visualize.

By allowing your taste to swallow truth, don’t judge, just let your mouth interpret.

By allowing your sense of touch to wonder, don’t think, just let your fingers create.By allowing your hearing to nestle in each vibration, don’t react, just let your ears listen.

By allowing your sense of smell to linger in every corner, don’t conceive, just let your nose detect.

By allowing your sight to bounce from one object to another, don’t question, just let your eyes visualize.If you completely release each of these senses to do whatever they please, you will create some truly unique and unpredictable content. Good luck finding that freedom!!

Target Markets

Written by Krista Johnson -- January 31st, 2008 in Marketing

There are many, many different markets that exist in our world. These markets might range anywhere from economical, political, industrial, etc. Although markets vary from group to group, and interest to interest, there always remains a constant…What appeals to your target market?

So knowing this fact, what questions can we ask in order to narrow down the field?

First, we must locate and specify the geological location we are marketing towards. Once we have determined the area we wish to market to, we must then conduct research to gain general demographic information. So what are some categories marketers look into for suggestions to produce their product to their target market?

Some demographics marketers and advertisers research and consider when producing to the masses may include:

* age

* economic status

* education

* employment

* gender

* language

* location

* origin

* race

* sexual orientation

Another approach to marketing is to specify a particular group. For example, marketers have a much different approach to advertising towards children than they do towards adults. When targeting children, marketers might choose to do so with toys, games, television shows, commercials, various types of food, etc. However, when targeting adults, marketers might choose to do so with electronics, technology, sales and promotions, shopping markets and stores, different types of food and restaurants, etc.

Thoroughly, marketers are constantly looking for different suggestions and ways to produce their products to their specific target markets. Along the way to these discoveries, they rely on demographics, personal and group interests, as well as attention satisfying appeal. So the next time you are in the market to buy a product or service, remember you were personally identified for just that reason.

Blogging Rules

Written by Krista Johnson -- January 24th, 2008 in Blogroll

Why are there so many tightly woven rules when it comes to freedom of speech and the expanse of creativity? I seem to ask myself this question quite often. When sitting down to write, no matter what topic I chose to write about, it seems that I am restricted to conformity. If I ever want to satisfy my audience and gain their readership, I have to abide by this set of standards. I just don’t understand why such strictness must be followed in order to be considered a “good” blogger.

As a blog writer, I would prefer not to feel so tied down by these guidelines. When forming my thoughts and penning out blogs, I tend to get caught up in the professionalism of the blogosphere and it’s rules. I find myself nitpicking my work until I’ve dumbed it down to satisfy the expectations. I also find that I struggle with producing great and magnetic content enough times a week to draw in my audience. By having all these worries regarding the expectations of what makes a good blog, I feel that my focus is not on the right element and that my mind isn’t fully contributing to my work.

So I ask you for your advice-how do I do both?

What is a constructive way I can produce great content under these strict rules and still have the comfortability of writing with my own style?

The Comforts of Writing

Written by Krista Johnson -- January 15th, 2008 in Copywriting

As professionals in whatever field of expertise, it can often be a struggle to produce work on a constant basis. As a writer, given specific deadlines, this presents a bit of problem. Finding the right words and the right mindset can be a struggling factor writers face when dealing with busy schedules.

In order to produce great content and remain punctual, there are a few suggestions to try. Determine what time of day your mind is most ready to write and take every precaution to avoid any distractions. Possible precautions to take include turning off your cell phone, not surfing the web or playing games, shutting off the television, as well as blocking out irrelevant thoughts inside your mind.

Then, figure out what makes your mind most ready to write and surround yourself with those comforts. For some people these comforts might include relaxing in a bath, wearing comfortable clothing, writing in the comforts of ones’ own bed, listening to soothing or relaxing music, or anything else that puts your mind at ease to accomplish the task of producing great content.

Also, stick to the idea of creative writing. As each and every idea flows from your mind, be sure to write them all down. Doing so will ensure that you will not forget any idea, thus creating a shortcut to possible future topics. Creative writing also frees your mind of the constraints of authoritativeness and allows the writing process to be open, unique, and even fun.

As you gain clarity and learn how to write comfortably, you will strengthen your writing abilities and become an accomplished student of the trade. Keeping these tips and your own personally developed concepts in mind will help create great work ethic, as well as illustrate how great of a writer you are. Good luck in your journey to discover who you truly are outside of a world full of distractions!

Retaining Your Customer Base

Written by Krista Johnson -- December 6th, 2007 in Marketing

In a world that is constantly changing and developing new advances in technology, it is becoming easier to keep up with consumers’ wants and needs. Businesses now have different options to choose from when conducting their advertising and marketing strategies. These new options have opened the door for reaching out and exploring different creative outlets for retaining customer relations.

Over the past few years, new tracking and reporting technologies have been developed. These technologies assist marketers with appealing to their target audience on a broader scale. Options marketers look to in order to form their decisions include demographic statistics, psychographic tendencies, customer preferences, and how customers and content connect with each other.

As new techniques and tools are created, old techniques are used less. Old techniques, such as click-throughs and open rates, are being replaced with measures that track more detailed components. These new techniques measure which consumers are considered highly valuable to the company; which consumers respond to long-term effects of the marketing plan; interactivity between the content and the customer; as well as determining if the brand relationship is powerful or flaccid.

Moreover, there are advances with how companies distribute their marketing plans. One way this is possible is through data mining. Data mining is where the consumer is tracked throughout their purchasing cycle. There also exists software, such as database management, that allows for the storage, management, organization, and retrieval of information from within databases.

If followed correctly, these new developing techniques can be very efficient. With time, courage, and the initiative to approach marketing differently, these new paths yield success. With mass individualization on the rise, marketers are better able to reach their customers. Examples of this attainability include monitoring tools, online templates, and e-newsletters, which all make it more simple to deliver a good branding experience to the consumer.

Altogether, retaining customers and maintaining customer loyalty are major key objectives that are changing with time and technology. The main goal of customer retention may still remain the same, however, new methods and online templates are quickly making it easier and more defiant to attain this goal.

Great Marketing Practices

Written by Krista Johnson -- November 29th, 2007 in Marketing

One great steal in the marketing industry is to build and maintain loyal customers. Doing so will create repeat customers as well as repeat sales.

What does it mean to have loyal customers? Customer loyalty includes customers who make routine repeat purchases, buy from both service and product lines, refer other consumers, and stand by the company’s side even though the competition’s pull is great. In order to have these wonderful traits from customers, marketers must know how customers behave, how customers think, what needs and demands the customers have, and how the customers chose to conduct their business with marketers.

In order to attain this customer based knowledge, marketers must do their homework. Marketers must research customers’ habits and behaviors. Marketers must also interpret and analyze the found data as to what drives consumers to purchase specific products and pushes them into one preference or another.

Marketing can also be looked at from yet a different angle. According to Deborah Athens, “Marketing requires the left brain to have the quantitative discipline to do the analysis, and the right brain to have for the broader ability to think outside the box.” Both halves of the brain must exist for marketers to have a successful strategy that utilizes both creativity as well as knowledge.

After researching the various traits of customers, marketers must next set out on the road to success. First, marketers should understand the industry and its strengths and weaknesses. Marketers must also develop a strategy that compensates for the customers. Then, marketers need to pen out a marketing plan and in turn execute that plan to further their success among their customers. In order for this idea to be successful, marketers must pay close attention to the marketing plan. When doing so, marketers are making sure the plan is staying en route and following though with its objectives.

Embarking on such a journey, marketers are taking a huge leap when reaching out to customers. They are driving blindly on a road that keeps changing and in order to stay on path, marketers must continually give their customers what is expected. If marketers do not continue to change and grow with their customers’ needs, they will quickly get lost in the ever-expanding world of marketing.

Marketing to the Masses

Written by Krista Johnson -- November 20th, 2007 in Marketing

When initially starting to market, companies have to start small. First, they need to figure out the product, find a business partner not afraid to venture on the risky side, and market to their target audience. Once the specified group of consumers starts purchasing the product, a buzz effect erupts, causing other consumers to buy that product and populate the industry with that product. Consumers typically won’t purchase products from unestablished companies that only talk about their great features. Instead, consumers buy products that other consumers are buying.

One problem with marketing to the masses arises when companies think they can reach everyone through mainstream advertising. This presents a large mistake on behalf of the marketing team. Often, marketers will try to cut corners and save money by advertising to everyone with the same ad. What they don’t realize is that marketing varies across a wide spectrum of businesses and needs to be specified. Things to consider when advertising to specific groups of consumers include gender, age, race, and social class. Be sure to realize that there is a distinction between advertising towards pop culture and stereotyping in separating consumers.

What one marketer might consider off limits and offensive, might be a great pitch for another marketer. One game plan could potentially draw the target audience in closer for one marketer, but push the target audience of another marketer further away. Marketers can show they know who their audience is by researching their interests. When focusing on how diverse consumers are, marketers recognize the needs of individuals and strive to better provide for that group. Good marketers sponsor products that appeal to their target audience. They take interest in their consumers and show respect by advertising to their culture. In doing so, marketers form trusting bonds with their consumers all while not forming bias.

If a company wants to be the best company for a specific group of people, that company should advertise to that specific group. Directing your advertisements towards your target audience will illustrate your knowledge of how to gain customer loyalty. It also strengthens the fact that you recognize your audiences’ needs and dedicate your services to bringing them better awareness about the products and services you offer.

In the end, marketing really depends on who the product is directed at. The advertising of a product is also key. When a company combines these concepts, they begin to build they will be able to better understand the target audience, they can study the consumers in that area and begin to build their status up by acquiring the right consumers.
